June Book Club: Autism is Not a Disease by Jodie Hare | Wednesday 11th June, 7-9pm

from £0.00

A casual, friendly book club where we discuss this month's book, hosted by Rosie from Shelf Life Books and Zines.

Our June meeting will be held at *venue tbc (somewhere in Canton though!)* on Wednesday 11th June, 7-9pm. We’ll have some snacks (feel free to byo!) and drinks, and we'll be discussing Autism is Not a Disease: The Politics of Neurodiversity by Jodie Hare. Here's the blurb:

Neurodiversity is one of the most urgent political issues of our time. As the number of diagnoses of autism, ADHD, and other types of neurodivergence rises, we are starting to understand that there is no such thing as a 'normal' brain. But society is still organised around neuronormativity, and autism is treated as a disease.

Jodie Hare, diagnosed with autism at twenty-three, argues it is time to redefine the politics of who we are. She calls for the recognition of diversity as part of natural variation, rather than a departure from sameness. This will have an impact on the places where we learn, work, and socialise - and Hare shows how these can be adapted to be more inclusive and accessible.

She shows how we might commit to building a world where we can all thrive, one that works to combat discrimination based on race, class, gender, and disability.

All attendees will have 10% off through the Shelf Life website, just use the code AUTISMISNOTADISEASE at the checkout. We also have paid-forward copies available for anyone who needs one. Ticket costs are sliding scale - funds are used to cover the room hire and to keep it accessible to everyone so please choose whichever suits you best.

If you have any access needs, just drop us a message and we'll do everything we can to accommodate them. If you're nervous about attending (we get it!) for the first time, feel free to pop in or message for more info about the club/location or drop us a message if you'd like someone to meet you outside on your way in.

See you there!
